Boated my son and his partner this morning for the TBF Junior Louisiana Championship tournament at D’Arbonne.

Only 17 teams registered. I think there were about 70 last year, I’m not sure why the huge drop-off, but since TBF only lets the top 10% move on, it meant only first place would advance from the Louisiana Championship this year. I was hoping they’d round 1.7 (10% of 17) up to two teams, but no dice.

Water temp was 57-59 F. Water clarity varied all over the lake, but where we ran to the water was clean but stained. As much trouble as we had pre fishing yesterday, it surprisingly didn’t take us long to put a pattern together this morning and the boys had a limit of five in the livewell by 9:35 AM. My son lost two good ones after that.

By 11:00 or so the wind picked up from a slight ripple to whitecaps, and related or not, the bite absolutely dropped off and we couldn’t buy a bite after that. We really needed to cull at least one fish, preferably two, but never could make it happen.

We went to weigh-in with a limit, but a light one. Didn’t quite go 10 lb, but it turned out to be enough in the end. They ended up winning, and another Benton team, all great guys that we fish other tournaments with, ended up in second for a Benton Middle School 1-2. I think they might’ve been the only two teams with a limit today.

I was pretty shocked that our weight was enough, but the boys and I are stoked about moving on to the World Championship at the end of July, wherever TBF decides to hold it. We’ve never really fished much outside the ArkLaTex area, so this’ll be something completely new for us. We should know the fishery in a month or so.

Win or no win, I couldn’t be prouder of the boys for keeping their heads down on an unfamiliar lake, including pre fishing through some nasty weather that would make anyone want to go back home. They stuck with it, and I’m glad they saw some results for their work.

I’m fishing out of a 14’ Alumacraft MV1448NCS.  I bought the bare hull and set it up for the way I want to fish.  I’m fishing by myself and fishing smaller electric motor only lakes.

I have a 40lb minn kota on the transom and a 45lb minn kota on the bow.  Depending on the wind I can  fish 6 to 7 hours on one battery and still have about 50% left.  This old man won’t fish longer than that anymore anyways.

I have three pedestal seat mounts in various locations in the boat.  I have a Lowrance Elite 4 Chirp at the bow.

I have two storage compartments up by the front that will hold all the tackle that I’ll use.

I’ve only fished this boat one season and will be making a few minor modification this winter.

Re: Chair, Butt/Casting Seat, or No Seat?

Re: Chair, Butt/Casting Seat, or No Seat?

Unless you really like sitting down while fishing a full front seat just gets in the way. A butt seat is way smaller and you can lean on it if needed and it sometimes keeps you from falling out of the boat if you hit a stump/catch a bad wave.

For the back if he doesn’t want one just take it out. As a coangler many times it really gets in the way.

it’s not always about what a guy WANTS to do… some of us have back issues and have made the choice:  sit down and fish all day, plus be able to MOVE the next day… or stand up for 15 minutes until the back spasms send you home.

seats of all types have a role, a purpose.  but that’ a very personal choice.

for what it’s worth, if a guy works at it, you can flip, pitch, skip from a seated position … just have to ‘want to’…  and that is still using 7.5 foot rods.

Which States Have The Best Fly Anglers?

Which States Have The Best Fly Anglers?

Everyone knows at least one of those fly anglers who just seems to get it. The ones who always catch the most fish, the biggest fish, the most challenging fish, and they always seem to make it look easy. This person may be a local legend who sits at the end of your favorite riverside bar every night, or they may be some quiet cashier parked on a stool at your local fly shop.
